A young protester who had barricaded herself into a
tunnel emerged last night after intense negotiations.
Lisa "Squeak" Feeney (26) was into her 10th. day in the dark grave-sized pit on the Rath Luth[sic] promontory fort in the Tara valley in Co. Meath.
She had refused to come out of the hole dug by protester pals until work on the controversial M3 motorway was halted. But last night - ahead of Specialist risk assessors flying to Dublin today to monitor the situation - Squeak emerged from her den.
The Rath Luth[sic] Action Camp said they had reached an agreement with the National Roads Association[sic].
It paves the way for a change in the distance of the M3 route from the Rath Luth[sic], the claimed.
According to the Rath Luth Action Camp, a new 10-point deal would halt work on the site until next month.
The self styled "Tara-pixie" took the drastic step of locking herself into the tunnel on Thursday morning - after already living down there for one week.
"I'm prepared to stay down and put my life on the line to stop the machinery from going above me", the psychology student had said. The door of the tunnel was locked and only Lisa could open it.
She had threatened to collapse the tunnel on top of herself if anyone tries to force the door open.
"I'd warn anyone who is trying to remove me from here not to do so, your not getting me out of here by force", said Lisa.
Concerns had been expressed for her safety. The building company will today send in an expert to test the structure of the fort and the tunnels.
Earlier in the week, Ms. Feeney's boyfriend Paddy said Lisa felt safe and very committed to staying in the tunnel.
"We keep checking her air supply every 10 minutes and she has food and water. She's in good spirits as well", said Paddy.
Protesters, who fear the road building could destroy the national monument, had yesterday met officials from the National Roads Association[sic] to discuss the controversial motorway.
