Trouble and Squeak
By - Natalie Brolly.

Torrential rain and gale force winds have not stopped protesters remaining at the site of the M3 Tara motorway.

The Rath Lugh Direct Action group are continuing a stand-off with Gardaí in support of one of it's members, Lisa "Squeak" Feeney (26), who has burrowed into a tunnel and chained herself to a jack in a bid to halt work on the controversial motorway.

The protesters are urging the Minister for Environment John Gormley to visit the site "to see for himself" that the motorway is being built within the preservation area of the Rath Lugh Monument.

Squeak, from Tralee, Co. Kerry, remains there despite the group's failed attempt to get an injunction to stop work.

Fellow protester, Peadar O'Ceallaigh, applied for the injunction at the High Court to stop the work at the M3 Dublin to Navan motorway on behalf of Squeak but Ms. Justice Mary Lafoy ruled there was no evidence before her that there had been any breach of the National Monuments Act.

Squeak is prepared to sit it out as long as possible and according to a spokesperson from the group, she has enough supplies to stay for two months.

She entered the tunnel, which had been dug by protesters, on Thursday after the demonstrators were served with a notice to move from the area to allow construction works to continue.

Three arrests were made that day after violence broke out. Two remain in custody, the third was released later that day.

A spokesperson for the National Roads Authority said: "We are still hoping that this young lady will be in safe hands and exit the tunnel safely and the issue will be resolved through discussions".

James Feeney, father of the Trinity graduate, made an emotional plea: "Your mother is scared you'll be buried alive".
