Violence ends deal with
motorway protesters
By - Unknown.
AN agreement between a group of eco-warriors and the
builders of a controversial motorway is off after a
protest turned violent with workers being pelted with
stones, according to the National Roads Authority.
Three protesters, two men and a woman, were arrested
yesterday after allegedly trespassing onto the work site
for the new M3 at Rath Lugh in Co. Meath. Initial work on
plotting out the footprint of the motorway has now
begun.
Paddy O'Kearney, a member of the Rath Lugh Direct Action
camp, said the protesters have been left with no
alternative but to "digger dive" - or throw themselves in
front of construction machinery - in an effort to halt
the works and protect the national monument.
Last night, an NRA spokesman said "all deals are off"
after protesters began intimidating workers who were
trying to erect a fence.
