Opinions on Tara are
short-sighted
Kevin Myers and I have a few things in common. We both
hail from Leicestershire, and now reside in Kildare.
Beyond that I fear we may part company.
I would have hoped Mr. Myers could have used his enormous
intellect to concoct an argument that went beyond the
hoary old "sure you can't throw a stone in Meath without
hitting a monument" blarney ("Unleash the JCBs", Irish
Independent, September 27th.). It is mischievous, no
doubt. And who can resist having a pop at Hollywood stars
to boot?
But he knows full well this proposed route swings closer
to the Hill at the north than the N3, where there will be
a large interchange.
Huge pressure to "develop" the area will ensue.
Woolly statements from Minister Gormley about protecting
the surroundings are risible.
No mention, then, from Big Kev about the double tolls for
the hard-pressed commuter. At least it's encouraging to
see him acknowledging the existence of the plain folk of
Ireland.
The truth of the matter is that the road may be required,
but the route was wrong.
More forward planning from our government could have
avoided this debacle. But then we don't do forward
planning here in Ireland.
That's why the commuter belt is there, and why we feel
the need to build motorways to perpetuate the mess.
I look forward to reading Kevin's piece decrying the
planning disaster that has led us here.
Do you do requests, Kev?
