Don't shatter our Valley of
dreams
I write to reiterate the position of those of us
campaigning to keep the M3 motorway out of the Tara
Valley for the sake of those who have, like Mr. John
Reilly (Letters, December 3rd.), sadly missed the
point.
Despite the perceived lack of "physicality", this valley
is the most archaeologically, mythologically and
spiritually significant place in Ireland, sacred to Irish
people at home and abroad, past and present. The M3 will
not solve the transport problems facing Meath's citizens,
but will merely be a swift and expensive trip to the
traffic jam in Dublin, while the real solution - the
pre-existing railway - languishes unused.
The flood of ill-planned development that will follow in
the wake of the M3 will irrevocably shatter Ireland's
most sacred space. It is time the Irish decision makers
listened to their consciences and do what is right for
their citizens and their progeny, not for tourists or
scholars or euro, but because it is right.
