Tara destruction reason for a
"No"
As the Government scratches its collective head wondering
what happened to the Lisbon Treaty, as one of the
majority who voted "No" let me explain why. It wasn't
neutrality, abortion or the fear of conscription. It was
the wilful destruction of the Gabhra Valley, Tara's
landscape, against the wishes of the majority of Irish
people. (A RedC survey of 2005 showed that 70pc were
against the chosen route.)
The EU, through its commissioner Stavros Dimas and the
European Court of Justice, had an opportunity and indeed
a duty to stand up to the Government on this issue and
they backed away - perhaps because of the vote on the
Treaty.
The government side did not help its own cause by the
arrogant attitude of the spokespeople to the electorate
in general.
As they wonder why, perhaps our representatives will
begin to listen to the voice of the people of Ireland
rather than assuming that they know best.
